Vitamin A Redefines Swimwear Proving Sustainable is Sexy

WHO

Amahlia Stevens, Founder/Designer of Vitamin A

Laguna Beach, CA

I grew up on the beaches of Southern California and now live in Laguna Beach with my husband and my twin girls - which is honestly where much of my inspiration comes from! I love just being at the beach and in the ocean, and pondering what I want to wear next. My newest collection was inspired by Formentera, so travel is also a huge source of inspo. Along with nature, art, and movies, I've found lately that new "green technology" is inspiring me to push the limits with plant-based fabrics & more.

WHAT

Vitamin A is not only a brand, but also a lifestyle that combines feminine design with sustainable innovation. Our motto is ‘Sustainability is Sexy’ - so we're all about making effortless, sexy, West Coast style, that's also eco-friendly. As we redefine the idea of “sexy” beyond simply just the visual, this speaks to who our consumer is - we design for confident, empowered women from diverse backgrounds, who shop consciously for high quality swim & beachwear.

After years of designing lines for other brands, I decided to make my own, and make exactly what I wanted to wear to fit my body like it should.

WHEN

Before founding Vitamin A in 2000, I spent a decade as a fashion consultant, developing some of the best-known brands in the surf and sportswear industries. After years of designing lines for other brands, I decided to make my own, and make exactly what I wanted to wear to fit my body like it should.

I also had worked on a design project with Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia and a pioneer of the environmental movement, where I learned how he was redefining the outdoor industry by creating technical fabrics from recycled plastic bottles. So eventually I set out to do for swimwear fabrics, what Yvon was doing for outdoor fabrics - and so came our signature EcoLux fabric!

WHY

I think there are many factors that really set Vitamin A apart and make us unique among other swimwear brands. Most importantly, we’re authentically Californian (the West Coast vibe is in our DNA), we’re the pioneer in the world of elevated sustainable swimwear, and we offer clean silhouettes in sophisticated palettes. Overall, we're constantly redefining the concept of sexy, beyond the visual. Women can look to our brand for high quality swimwear that makes the feel good, while also doing good.

We also produce all of our swimwear locally in California which dramatically reduces our emissions for shipping and transporting raw materials AND allows us to take the time to get to know the people who make our goods.

FAVORITE

That's such a hard question! Can I name a few? The Leah Bodysuit in EcoRib is such a classic staple, and the Alana Bodysuit is BioRib is a one-piece with a fun twist. I l also love the Coco High Waisted Bottoms and the Giada Asymmetrical Top if we're talking bikini sets. And you can't go wrong with the Sugar Cane Beach Wrap and Provence hat when it comes to completing your beach look.

SUSTAINABLE

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at Vitamin A. Our passion for protecting our earth touches every aspect of our business - from our sustainable fabrics, to our production processes, to our partnerships.

Our popular EcoLux fabric (made of recycled nylon fabric) was the first of its kind. Since then, we've introduced our Refresh fabric (made from actual plastic water bottles) and our BioRib fabric (made from raw plant-based fibers). BioRib was a huge step for us because being plant-based means there’s zero impact on the food chain, with 20% less CO2 emissions, and lower water consumption!

We also produce all of our swimwear locally in California which dramatically reduces our emissions for shipping and transporting raw materials AND allows us to take the time to get to know the people who make our goods. We love knowing firsthand that our manufacturing teams hold the highest standards of workplace ethics and environmental responsibility. We try too, whenever possible, to work with vertically integrated facilities where everything from dyeing to knitting is done in one location (a total one-stop shop) to further lower our carbon footprint.

Vitamin A is also a member of 1% For the Planet, so we're able to help support those organizations who do the most important work of protecting and preserving our planet.
