Slow Down, Savor, and Shop Berte

WHO

Aimée deSimone, Founder

Beacon, NY

My name is Aimée deSimone and I am Berte. It’s sometimes tough to see where the person ends and the brand begins. I’m also a television producer with a background in news, documentary, and reality. To say Berte is my side hustle is technically true, but to be honest I basically have two jobs right now. My interests include exploring new cities, silliness, fried chicken sandwiches, wine, lists, being outside, and my dog.

I run Berte out of my home in New York City, where I live with my husband and our silly corgi lady named Bowie. BUT, we just bought a house in Beacon, NY! The Hudson Valley has always been a great source of inspiration for me (the local food, being close to nature, the sweet little Main Streets), so it’s a dream to finally call it home.

WHAT

Berte is an online home and lifestyle shop curated to evoke a sense of pause. We carry handmade goods that help you slow down and savor the little details.

In the shop you’ll find home décor, textiles, jewelry & accessories, natural beauty products, stationery, and so many other things that bring intentionality into the day to day routine.

WHEN

I started working on Berte a little over a year ago after finally saying out loud “I want to own a shop.” It’s something I’ve had stuck in my head since high school, but after college I found myself running head first into television. Ten years later, I burned myself out and knew I needed to start planning for a new life chapter.

Berte represents a style I’ve been honing for years – an appreciation for small details, one-of-a-kind artistry, and well-made pieces that elevate a space and improve your mood.

I started to carefully consider how I wanted to spend my time. I kept thinking about the days, the weeks (at one point months), I spent on the road for work and how I would always seek out these lifestyle shops in my downtime. I loved getting to know a city through these shops, but above all I was always so inspired by the curation of goods. The way you could get to know someone through a collection of products that in turn could create a sense of community gave me such a sense of joy. I knew I needed to follow that joy and that my shop would need to feel like an oasis from the hectic lives we all tend to lead (myself included).

So what started as a daydream, incrementally turned into an obsessive vision. Berte represents a style I’ve been honing for years – an appreciation for small details, one-of-a-kind artistry, and well-made pieces that elevate a space and improve your mood.

WHY

Berte is unique because of me. I honestly don’t know how else to explain it. I spend all of my time thinking about every single piece of this shop (my husband can attest to this) and how to stay on the path when it comes to our mission of being more present. My producer background is also an unusual X factor for the shop. I’ve never run my own business and the last time I worked in retail was in high school, but a producer’s main talent is their ability to tirelessly solve problems and execute a plan. In a way, I’ve spent most of my life working towards being a small business owner without even realizing it. I’ve also been fortunate enough to connect with so many talented people all over the country. Even some abroad. Berte has become a way for me to bring all of these pieces together.

FAVORITE

This is TOUGH as I carry such an eclectic mix. But I guess, I’d have to say our exclusive Malka Dina incense holders. They were made special for the shop and I just feel like the act of lighting incense and getting quiet is very Berte.
