Skylar's Safe Solution Solution to the Traditional Fragrance Market

WHO

Cat Chen, Founder of Skylar

Los Angeles, CA

I always had natural ingredients on my radar.  As an executive at clean living powerhouse The Honest Company, it was my job to. But when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, safe ingredients went from a professional responsibility to a personal necessity.

As a self-proclaimed “no-makeup” makeup person,my signature was and still is perfume. My love for scents began in middle school, when I owned a big collection from Bath & Body Works (this is also where I interned 10 years later). I discovered that almost all perfumes contained highly allergenic ingredients, and I  knew I had to do something about it. That year, a big idea (along with baby Anne) were born.

I set to work creating a clean fragrance line that would offer the fresh, delightful scents we all love, without the parabens, phthalates, glycol, animal testing, animal products or other allergenic ingredients found in most products in the perfume industry. By partnering with a local perfume house to craft artisanal formulas using only safe ingredients, Cat created Skylar: fresh, refined scents we love with ingredients that love us back.

Skylar was created to be a much needed solution in the traditional fragrance market. We create beautiful and fresh scents that fragrance lovers don’t have to think twice about in terms of safety. We are proactive and thoughtful in the decisions we make across all channels as a company to give consumers the best. As a company, we care about being straightforward and honest with our customers regarding our product formulations so that they know that what they are using is safe. No unnecessary frills, no gimmicks, just beautiful, effective, and most importantly safe fragrance products that women will love.

One of our core values is transparency, so we aim to be very transparent with our customers. We let them know what is and isn’t in our products so that they can rest assured that what they are putting on their body is safe.

WHEN

While I was working at The Honest Company, I learned a lot about consumer product safety and the variety of ingredients that can make a product toxic or unsafe to consumers. I began incorporating these learnings into my life to make more conscious purchasing decisions. I have been a fan and user of fragrance since I was very young and really didn’t think twice about the safety of the fragrance products I was using. Shortly after I had my daughter, when she was 4 months old she began having allergic reactions to what turned out to be my perfume. After a lot of research, I learned that there are a host of harmful and toxic ingredients in fragrance products and that many users suffer from allergic or negative adverse reactions after use. Fragrance brands weren’t being honest with what they put in the products and I realized I had an opportunity to change the standard and so, Skylar was born.

WHY

15% of people experience some sort of allergic or negative reaction to fragrance. After I learned that my daughter and several others that I know fall into this category, it was very important to me that Skylar’s products be hypoallergenic. One of our core values is transparency, so we aim to be very transparent with our customers. We let them know what is and isn’t in our products so that they can rest assured that what they are putting on their body is safe.

FAVORITE

I can’t stop reaching for our monthly Scent Club’s July Scent called Salt Air. It really is summer in a bottle and instantly transports me to a day at the beach. Plus it comes in a convenient travel rollerball, so I take it with me everywhere.

SUSTAINABLE

Our team is constantly working to find new ways to improve our sustainability and eco-conscious practices. This important to both us and our customers, so we evaluate and look at how we can make meaningful changes and updates to everything from our packaging, supply chain, product development, to partnerships.

Currently one of the ways we’ve incorporated sustainability into our packaging, is that our packing peanuts dissolve in water. This was a simple and practical way to incorporate sustainability into our packaging early on, and our customers think it’s really fun too! We are actively exploring safe and conscious options and are very excited about some of the projects we are working on to highlight this important initiative.
