How Organic Basic’s Sustainable Underwear Cuts Back Your Laundry
Founders, Organic Basics
Organic Basics is a Copenhagen based brand creating conscious everyday essentials like underwear, socks and t-shirts in organic cotton and recycled textiles. Our inspiration comes a desire to make sure that the garments closest to our skin are comfortable and carefully considered towards the environment. We’re inspired by innovation in terms of sustainability.
We’d describe ourselves as a constant innovator. We want to make clothing more sustainable at all stages in the lifetime, so we’re continually learning and trying to improve everything in that area.
We started out in 2015 and in the beginning we simply made organic cotton boxer briefs for men - that came from a desire to start creating underwear that we would wear, as we felt that there weren’t good enough options out there for guys. Sustainability has always been a conscious part of the process from day one, as we wanted to be part of the solution, not the problem.
The important thing to us is that our customers follow our journey. Buying ethically and more sustainably, or at least buying with purpose is something we always try to talk about. Perhaps it’s the way that we communicate with them, answer their questions with transparency, or constantly innovate towards making our products more sustainable.
We also focus right across the garments journey when we create. For example, our SilverTech Active collection is made from GRS certified recycled nylon and then treated with a bluesign approved recycled silver salt called Polygiene so that it stays fresher for longer - helping you to cut back on laundry. The thing is, washing and drying clothing actually causes about 2/3rds of the environmental impact of it, and so that means that the activewear we’ve created is more sustainable at the wearing stage as well.
Every action we try to make is thoughtful about the environment. As we mentioned earlier we focus right across the supply chain. We only work with accredited suppliers and factories with strict environmental and social standards. They’re places in which sustainability is a core value, just like it is here at Organic Basics. You can read more about our fabrics and factories on our website.
That’s so difficult to say. Right now, the recycled wool socks are one of the favourites. They’re warm, soft and treated with Polygiene so you can wear them more and wash them less. Developing them out of recycled wool was challenging, but we’re super happy with the product.
