Moon Cycle Bakery Creates Hormone-Supportive Treats Delivered to Your Doorstep

WHO

Devon Loftus, Owner

Chatham, NJ

As a 29-year-old homebody who currently lives on the road, I find inspiration in the quiet, in-between moments. The ones that often times are a result of genuine conversation, quiet hours, soft pink sunsets and laughter. Duality has always been an element of life that I enjoy and am intrigued by — if I had a choice to be happy or sad for the rest of my life, I’d choose neither, opting for both in varying degrees at random times. This value of duality along with the desire to help others feel seen, heard and empowered through well-being is what gave birth to Moon Cycle Bakery.

WHAT

At Moon Cycle Bakery, we create hormone-supportive treats by focusing on which micronutrients we can lose during our cycles (anywhere from our period to menopause) and help to replace those micronutrients by focusing on certain ingredients that replenish. Our approach is looking at food as medicine — both for the body and soul. All treats are gluten-free, dairy-free and refined sugar-free and taste rich, decadent and completely satisfying. It’s been important to us from the get-go that our treats satisfy as much as they do support. We’re also big believers in encouraging education around nutrition and our menstrual cycle as well as dismantling the stigma around menstruation. We think being a woman and menstruator is pretty powerful stuff and we want to genuinely rewrite the script when it comes to menstrual health and celebrating the power we have inside.

WHEN

Moon Cycle Bakery began when Devon's friends decided to throw her a "West Coast" bachelorette night. It was the coming together of people from all walks of life, ideals, styles, laughs but all had one thing in common: they believed in supporting + loving one another. This night was no exception. Near the end of the night, Devon's now husband met everyone with a homemade cake decked out in chocolate ganache. The crew devoured it stopping only to smile and share the cake with fellow bartenders and servers— one of those surreal moments where we're reminded how transportive food and good company really are. After the cake was gone, one of their friends walked over and thanked them for the cake. "I just needed to tell you that this is one of the best cakes I've ever eaten," she said, "And I'm not sure if it's because I'm about to get my period, but I almost cried." Devon sat next to her friend later that night and told her not to worry. "We'll be sure to bring you a slice of this cake every month."

What started as a heart-centered gesture has become a company built out of the idea that people deserve to feel heard, seen and gifted during a time of the month that isn’t always pretty. A space to shed the stigma + talk about periods as naturally as they occur in our bodies. A community where we can cultivate the belief that it's possible and important to satisfy our cravings and nourish our bodies — that we don't have to give up one for the other.

A business that values education and believes that understanding our bodies leads to choice which leads to empowerment.  In order to lead with integrity, we decided to team up with experts, bloggers + women alike to create Moon Cycle Bakery the way it deserved — with wholeheartedness, love + healthy alternatives that satisfied (and soothed) cravings.

WHY

Moon Cycle Bakery is unique in the way that it acknowledges a women’s period and helps to re-write stereotypes by educating people on why they may feel the way they feel and how to address their symptoms, etc. It’s also unique because no other product and service like this exists at the moment. We also take care in creating treats that are good for you (some vegan choices, too!) but taste absolutely delicious, something we often hear from our customers is rare in the industry.

FAVORITE

My favorite is our Chocolate Cup Sweetened with Honey and Ginger and is tied with our Chocolate Cup with Gluten-Free Pretzels. I love it because it's decadent and I find myself savoring each bite — a true feat when sometimes caught up in the busy-ness and noise of the world. I also love it because I tend to be low in magnesium and therefore crave chocolate before my period (and really most my cycle). I can also experience symptoms like slowed down digestion, anxiety, bloating and cramps. Since cacao is full of magnesium, the chocolate cup helps to support my hormones and leaves me feeling relaxed, my cramps are less intense if I have any at all, and my digestion is happy.
