Mien Offers Ethical Maternity, Nursing, and Postpartum-Friendly Clothing

WHO

Lisa Hsieh, Founder/Designer of Mien Studios

Long Beach, CA

I’m Lisa Hsieh. I’m the founder and designer of Mien Studios, a sustainable women’s and children’s clothing line that’s made in L.A. I live in Long Beach with my husband, my three-year-old son, and our dog. I’ve been an apparel designer in Los Angeles for about 14 years now. I’ve designed for major clothing labels and also smaller indie brands. I draw inspiration from my everyday life first, always taking notes on how I want my clothing to fit and feel then sketching a design from there. I was a fine art major in college so I also constantly turn to my art background for design sparks. Traveling also helps me reset my mind so I can create.

My lifestyle also completely changed since I became a mom and now there’s little to no time in the mornings to put together an outfit. Just from taking cues from my own life, I designed this clothing collection with busy moms and mama-to-be’s in mind to help make our lives easier.

WHEN

I came up with the idea of a modern mother and child clothing line when I became a new mother myself. To me, the vast majority of maternity clothing on the market were poorly made, unflattering, and without many style options. Not just with clothes for pregnancy, it was still difficult for me to find items that fit me post baby. WHY

I design for all modern, busy women - with extra thoughtful design elements in each garment to make life easier for those of us who are also mothers. Maternity clothing shouldn’t be a category that is an afterthought or made just to be worn for a short amount of time. That’s not sustainable for the environment and is a terrible investment for consumers. I offer styles that are not only high quality and beautiful, but also versatile and can adapt to our changing bodies. I want to break the cycle of maternity and nursing clothing being discarded when pregnancies are over and through Mien, I hope to create clothes that are timeless, effortless to wear, and make women feel amazing - before, during, and after pregnancy.

FAVORITE

My favorite product is also the style I started this collection with - the Lakeside Wide Leg Jumpsuit. It does it all. It fits at the bust then drapes and falls beautifully to skim our curves. The Lakeside looks cool with a pair of sneakers, elegant with strappy sandals, and travels like a dream. It’s a must-have item that I pack whenever I go on trips. It’s made from my line’s custom knit, signature fabric using GOTS certified organic cotton. The fabric is thick, super soft, and dyed in custom colors. Its hint of stretch also makes it perfect for maternity, nursing, and post-pregnancy wear. It’s available in 13 colors, and counting.

I deliberately don’t follow the fashion calendar, which means I would be producing up to 5 collections every year. Instead, I debut new designs one or two at a time, when I’m completely satisfied with the look, the feel, and the quality.

SUSTAINABLE

Instead of making thousands, or even tens of thousands of pieces of the same style at a time, I make each style in the low hundreds, sometimes even less - so I don’t waste fabric and resources. I’m also very methodical with how and when I introduce new styles. Each style is created in hopes that they will be well loved and pair beautifully with many things in the customer’s closet. My signature fabric that I use often is also knit right here in L.A. using Global Organic Trade Standard (GOTS) certified organic cotton. I source my materials and trims locally as well, and every garment is cut, sewn, and dyed right here in town by small factories who pay their workers fair wages and provide a safe and clean working environment. Manufacturing responsible and locally costs more so my garments are more expensive compared to the prices of fast fashion, but more and more consumers are realizing that it’s worth it. I know my customers understands this and appreciate the quality and unique styles I offer. Every purchase matters. Shopping more consciously and truly loving what we buy, that’s how we change the current fast fashion paradigm.
