Merging Modern Technology and Experienced Craftsmanship to Create Timeless Jewelry
By: Terri Moore
We recently launched Folde Jewelry. Together with my husband and business partner, Marcus, we have created a line of jewelry that reflects our training and years spent working in the architecture, interior, and product design industry.
I began designing jewelry a few years ago while in between architecture projects. I wanted to explore form at a more intimate scale. Marcus had designed an engagement ring for me 8 years ago. But at the time he didn’t have enough experience to pull it off with any confidence, and ended up purchasing a ring from a jewelry designer. Funnily enough I still haven’t seen the original engagement ring design!
We spent the last few years acquiring the knowledge that we need to confidently put forward a line of jewelry that represents our design aesthetic.
The jewelry that we design is created using a hybrid of modern technology and traditional jewelry making techniques. We design the pieces using the same software we use for product design. This gives us minute control of surface quality and edges. Each piece is then printed in wax using a 3D printer. The wax model is used to create a mold from which the final piece will be cast. This process is called lost-wax casting and aside from the 3D printing has been used for centuries.
Using lost-wax casting means that all the intricate designs of the piece are preserved in the final cast. The final piece is polished by hand to bring out the fine details. Our contour ring also features a partially sandblasted finish to contrast and complement the high gloss finish, it gives it a two toned silver look.
3D printing gives us the capability to maintain a highly efficient manufacturing process. Unlike subtractive manufacturing methods that waste a significant amount of material, it employs additive manufacturing methods that generally only uses the material needed. We also take advantage of 3D printing to prototype each piece in plastic. This allows us to prototype and refine multiple times so that we can get the fit and feel of the design just right.
Our new collection, Contour, was inspired by the human form. Each piece is designed with sinuous curves to elongate and highlight the natural lines of the body. We create all of our pieces in silver, we can also produce them in gold by custom order. I have always had a soft spot for silver jewelry. When I worked for my mother’s interior design business as a teenager, I would spend a large amount of my earnings on silver charms for my charm bracelet.
When it came to creating our own jewelry line, we have focused on developing a small collection of statement pieces that I hope people will love and cherish for years to come. Each piece is cast in sterling silver, which is highly recyclable, and almost everything else used in the production process can be recycled too.
Timelessness is a feature that describes pieces that get the details right so that they remain precise expressions of style and never look dated. We want these pieces to be passed down to the next generation. We achieve this by focusing on every angle and corner to acquire flawless proportions. When the details are taken care of, nothing is left to desire. In this way, timelessness compliments the project of sustainability by creating lasting objects whose relevance never fades.
By staying loyal to these guiding principles, we can produce pieces that are unique without following trends making them bold enough to serve as striking statements, but also qualify them to become modern classics that will become heirlooms for generations.
For Folde Jewelry, quality, timelessness, and sustainability are integral aspects of modern design. Together, they produce an elegance that is impossible to resist.
