MARY YOUNG Challenges the Narrative of Sexy
Mary Young, Owner
I'm Mary Young, a twenty something woman living in Toronto Canada. I fill my time with a mixture of work - of course, alongside socializing with friends, workouts, the occasional run and delicious food. I studied fashion communications at Ryerson University in Toronto and after graduating in 2014 I launched my namesake lifestyle lingerie line.
MARY YOUNG the brand offers women lifestyle lingerie - think of a mix of traditional lingerie you wear for a partner blended with everyday basics that focus on function but not fashion. We bring these two categories together to offer garments that embrace a woman's natural shape rather than reshaping it and offer fashionable yet very functional pieces that allow a woman to feel confident to wear all day long and share with their partner if they choose to do so.
The concept behind my line was developed during my fourth year at Ryerson while I was working on my thesis. I began studying the lingerie industry, a category I previously could care less about and after months of research I realized the reason I didn't care much for lingerie is because I felt alienated by the industry and media. I never saw myself in ads and I was constantly told I wasn't sexy unless I looked like what I saw and wore what those women wore. I knew I couldn't be the only woman who felt this way and decided to do something about it. This concept behind encouraging all women to feel worthy of their bodies in their natural shape is the fuel to keep me going.
MARY YOUNG is proud to produce everything ethically in Montreal at a small production house. We also strive to have the least impact on the environment and feature paper packaging and avoid wasteful plastics. Aside from how we produce we are a brand that is for women from women and encourage everybody to challenge the narrative of what sexy is - when a woman is comfortable and confident, she is undeniably sexy. In 2017 we launched the Self Love Club, a movement that encourages open conversation around self love and self care online and offline through guest writers and events.
