Have We Decided if Social Media is Good or Bad?

By: Meagan Mabilangan

In a world where social media is such a huge part of many people’s lives, it’s valid and important to ask ourselves if social media is a good or bad thing. I believe that that depends on the person and how they choose to use these platforms. For the most part, social media is a force of positivity, giving millions of people a chance to share their thoughts and opinions. On the other hand, there are also times when social media be negative when it’s used for comparison or spreading hate. Despite the negatives, I believe with the right use, social media can be a positive tool in everyone’s life.

With the rise of apps like Instagram and Twitter, it’s very uncommon to meet someone who doesn’t have one type of social media account. But the most important thing to note when using these platforms is just that, the way the user interacts with it. I totally believe that social media is a very powerful tool for spreading important messages. However, it’s also a place where people can go to be mean or compare themselves to the people they see online. This is when social media becomes harmful. When you stop using it for the right reasons and start using it in the wrong way. Something that helps is knowing when it’s time to put down the phone and stop scrolling. Just like everything else in your life, there are times when you need to take a break from social media.

A lot of the inspiration and motivation we get to be a better person or become healthier stems from the content we see online. When we’re looking at all of these girlbosses on Instagram, it’s only natural to become inspired by what they’re doing and want to incorporate some of their tactics into our own lives. This is how social media becomes that important tool in bettering ourselves. A massive part of branding now has to do with social media and without it, it would be very hard to get your brand running. Using social media to promote your brand, business, etc. is the essential way of gaining traction and developing a following. Having a way to interact with your audience is such an important way to get your brand or business doing its best.

Learning new things is always so fun and great for the soul. With websites like Youtube, you can learn to speak a new language, learn about astrology, or about anything you want to know. Having a platform like that or like Skillshare, is so amazing. You can constantly be learning new information on the side while still having a full-time job, being a student, or just living your life.

Being vocal about things you believe in or taking a stand against causes you’re passionate about is an amazing thing to be a part of. What’s even more incredible is that you can do it from virtually anywhere. Social media apps like Twitter give us the platform to speak our mind and interact with people who share our same values. It also gives us the chance to see other people’s point of view. And although there can be a lot of mean comments when someone doesn’t agree with you, when you believe strongly enough about something, other comments don’t really matter.

These social media platforms give us a community to stand with others, be inspired, and constantly be learning. How incredible is it that we live in a world where all of that is possible? And yes, with every positive there is a negative but looking at the bigger picture, social media can have a good influence on how we live our lives.
