The Handmade Jewelry Line Embracing Empowerment Through Self-Expression and Community
Cindy Hsu Zell, Founder of WKNDLA
Los Angeles, CA
My name is Cindy Hsu Zell and I am based in Los Angeles, CA. I grew up in San Gabriel near the mountains and studied sculpture and animation at USC. Nature influences a lot of my work. My pieces have been inspired by rock formations, the cascading waterfalls, and surreal landscapes. I am also constantly inspired by the material and process itself, allowing the medium to spark new ideas. My newest collection features mother-of-pearl, and the design process mostly involved working with the material to see what I could do with it to play with shape, form, and gravity.
WKNDLA is a contemporary jewelry line that embraces empowerment through self-expression and community. Each piece is handmade in Los Angeles with quality, comfort, and sustainability in mind. Behind every seasonless collection is a love for art in all forms and inspiration that draws upon nature, movement, history, mythology, and everyday moments.
WKNDLA is named after my favorite time and place, inspired by when I first started and was making things on weekends. I launched my first jewelry collection because I have incredibly sensitive ears and couldn’t find anything out there that was art-inspired, hypoallergenic, and lightweight. I ended up making my own!
Sometimes I get emails addressed to "the team at WKNDLA" and while it's incredibly flattering, it's actually just me over here! I make every single piece in my studio in Los Angeles, design collections, photograph and style the products, pack all the orders, bring them to the post office, answer emails, create logos, update the web site, and pretty much everything else. I take a lot of pride in my process and love the organic result that comes from having a touch of hand in everything I make. I love sharing the spirit of the handmade through quality products that will last, directly from my hands to yours.
The Coba Mobile Earrings were one of the first pieces I ever made and really reflect my love of art and design. I am also proud of my Calm Balm, which is all-natural herbal salve I developed that disinfects earrings before wear and helps prevent piercings from becoming irritated. I’ve heard from people who were able to wear earrings again because of it and that totally makes my day!
Materials are sourced with sustainability in mind. Jewelry comes in 100% recycled/recyclable packaging with plastic-free shipping. Raw metals are manufactured in the U.S. and certified nickel-free. The sterling silver I use is made with 100% recycled silver. I recycle all scraps and aim for low waste as a made-to-order company, never making more than demand. Every piece is ethically made from start to finish with an emphasis on reducing carbon footprint and making sure that the quality I provide makes the jewelry a purchase that will last a lifetime.
