Designing a Home Inspired by Nature
By : Lauren Kellim
When we think of times we have experienced peace and tranquility, the majority of us would say it was when we were in nature. Possibly sitting by the sea and enjoying the vast beauty of its simplicity and complexity. For some of us, the forest brings us to a place of serenity; the earthiness and all its textures are what inspire us. Or maybe a country farm, surrounded by wide open fields and beautiful oak trees with farm animals roaming the pastures, and a little creek running through. When we are surrounded by natural beauty, things that are designed by nature we feel alive, inspired and much more at peace.
Here are four quick points to remember when using nature's energy as your guide:
START WITH YOUR PALETTE
Keep your main palette to all earthy and natural colors. Choose hues such as cream, earthy taupe, white, grey. Then layer nature-inspired elements to that. Such as reclaimed wood tables or shelves, and add your pops of color with art or accessories.
A tip we like to use with clients is to have them put a nature board together. Choose your favorite setting, for example, a prairie or a desert, and keep within that palette! This will help you keep your focus when making design choices!
KEEP WINDOW TREATMENTS SIMPLE
Having lots of natural sunlight and fresh air flowing into your home is so important to your well being and to the tranquillity of your space. Think soft and flowy linen curtains!
This is a big must when bringing the feeling of nature inside. Houseplants are natural air purifiers and they add life to your indoor space. If you are someone without a green thumb and worry about keeping plants alive, try varieties such as the rubber plant or the snake plant! All these require little water, sunlight, and any normal room temperature!
WHEN BUYING FOR YOUR HOME, ASK YOURSELF TWO QUESTIONS
Does this purchase align with my values? (quality, eco-friendly, sustainable)
Is this purchase going to support the livelihood of hardworking craftspeople, artists, or companies working for good causes? Ultimately, is my home reflecting my appreciation for my planet?
Keeping our spaces clean, free of clutter, inspired by nature's palettes and living among natural materials is sure to guide us down a path of peace and tranquility in our home!
