Boyd’s of Texas Reflects the Hard Work and Dedication of its Creators

WHO

Katherine and Dennon Couron, Founders

San Antonio, Texas

We’re Katherine and Dennon Couron, and we’re the founders of Boyd’s of Texas, a natural fragrance house in San Antonio TX. We originally met in North Carolina, and have since relocated to South Texas. We started the company in mid-2016 and at the time, we were making bar soaps and oils and a few other face products. But, as we took those early products out and people started interacting with them, we quickly realized that our customers wanted to talk more about the scents we were making. We were being asked for perfumes and home sprays, so we began learning perfumery techniques and fell in love with the process and the materials. So we’ve spent the last two years building our first four fragrances - it’s still very early for us, and we’ve got plans for many more scents as our skills grow.

WHEN

I (Katherine) was leaving a previous career and I knew that I wanted to start something from scratch. What came out of that was a few very basic, handmade bath and body products. I ended up naming the company after my “adopted” grandfather - Boyd.

What I knew at the time was that I really wanted to do something with my hands. Boyd had been a bricklayer most of his life and he instilled in me an idea of what a good day’s work felt like. Formulating and making products isn’t laying bricks, but I wanted to make products that reflected the hard work and dedication that went into their creation.

At the time, we were making bar soaps and oils and a few other face products - I loved what were making. But, as we took those early products out and people started interacting with them, I very quickly realized that our users wanted to talk more about the scents we were making. We were being asked for perfumes and home sprays and candles that smelled like our bar soaps.

So we kind of took a big shot - I asked my husband Dennon to leave his work doing web development and we dedicated ourselves for almost a full calendar year to learning classic, turn of the century perfume techniques. As soon as we started showing people what we had been working on, it was obvious this is where we needed to be. We released our first two fragrances in August of 2017, with two more right before the holidays. Dennon is now our head perfumer, and everything we make is completely our own. We formulate, mix, cure, and bottle all of the perfumes we make. We spend a lot of time researching and re-creating fragrances as they might have existed in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and then updating them to work as a Boyd’s of Texas scent.

WHY

All of our perfumes are formulated, hand-bottled, and finished in our studio in San Antonio. Because of the fact that our fragrances use only natural materials, they go through a curing process over a period of a few months. They change and evolve for different wearers. We love that they are alive in a way that is more real to us than other fragrances.

FAVORITE

My (Katherine) personal favorite is our Green Vetiver Eau de Parfum. Dennon had a distinct memory of his grandfather's cologne and he wanted to translate that not only into a modern fragrance but also one that women would want to where. It has this amazing natural muskiness that I think wears beautifully on women yet you rarely find it in scents designed specifically for women.
