Apoterra’s Holistic Skincare is Environmentally Conscious
Dominique Caron, Founder of Apoterra
I’m a plant geek, lover of books, travel, and connecting with nature (and myself!) through outdoor walks and sports. I find pleasure in seeing beauty in the small things and making use of scraps and leftovers. I am curious and love the quest to understand how and why things works. I find a lot of inspiration within novels, movies, good conversations, scientific studies, and all sources of knowledge about plant medicine, holistic healing and the human body. I am also extremely motivated by climate change and pollution, and so almost every decision I make from the clothes I buy, to which type of cucumber I pick at the grocery store, to how I run my business is affected by my desire to see our planet healthy and sustainably managed. I currently live in Montreal, QC.
Our mission is to help people discover healthy, radiant skin naturally through plant powered skin care products and education of the benefits of a holistic lifestyle. We strive to deliver the highest quality, handcrafted skincare that is not only effective, but is also eco-friendly, healthy, and also enhances your daily ritual through scent, color and texture.
In 2010 I was working extremely long hours (14-18 hour days) on film sets in NYC. My job was manual and dirty, and made it so that I could not really wear makeup. I struggled with dry skin and hormonal breakouts, and felt self conscious about how my skin looked. At the same time, I was really inspired to live more sustainably, eat local and organic, and reduce my carbon footprint. I would bike to work and try to make healthy, eco-friendly choices with my food, but was frustrated with the lack of natural, eco-friendly skincare options. Through reading I became fascinated with herbal medicine, and within a few years ended up becoming a certified aromatherapist and herbalist. I started making my own products and would share them with co-workers I worked with on TV shows and movies. I was encouraged by the positive responses I got, and knew I wanted to live a healthier, less stressful lifestyle, so I decided to launch a skincare business. I launched my business in March 2012 as an Etsy shop, then called Caru Skincare Co.
I don’t think there is one set thing that makes Apoterra unique, but instead it is the culmination of many of our beliefs and company standards which include:
Our ingredients are natural, certified organic and sustainably sourced
We don’t use cheap fillers, unsafe or toxic ingredients
We utilize the powerful yet uncommon combination of raw plants, essential oils, herbal infusions, clays, natural extracts, but also more complex, innovative technology that has been proven safe, such as hyaluronic acid and liposomal vitamin C.
Our products are handcrafted by us in the USA
Our products are of high quality, but priced as low as we can manage so that they can be within reach (for instance, our Rose Serum retails for $38, but you can find comparable if not less effective oils on the market for $75-$100).
We are transparent about our ingredient sourcing with our batch # system, which allows you to look up when your product was made, where each ingredient in it was sourced from, and which organization certified it.
We offer skin care and holistic lifestyle education and support through our blog, social media accounts and through email (email@example.com)
Our packaging is eco-friendly and we ship all orders in eco-friendly shipping materials
We plant 1 tree for every product purchased and donate regularly to non-profit organizations
From seed, to bottle, to how our customers dispose of our packaging and shipping materials are considered in the process of creating our products. Apoterra means “from the earth”. We truly believe in respecting the natural cycle, and do our part to make our environmental footprint small. To start, we source organically and sustainably farmed ingredients that are safe for both us and the planet. We process our products as environmentally consciously as possible - we stay away from single use containers and tools, we recycle as much as possible, and we pay extra to have our electricity provided by wind energy. Our packaging is designed to be eco-friendly - our paper labels and boxes are made from post-consumer waste and are recyclable, we use glass and minimize the use of plastic as much as possible. We ship using eco-friendly materials such as biodegradable peanuts, recycled kraft paper and uncoated cardboard boxes. We also donate to non-profit organizations such as Trees for the Future (who plant 1 tree for every product we sell), Ocean Conservancy and Earth Justice.
I can’t go without a bottle of our Neroli Clarifying Toner! It keeps my skin breakout free, congestion free, hydrated and also nourished with powerful antioxidants and micronutrients.
