Alder New York Believes Skincare Is Genderless
Nina Zilka, Co-Founder/Chief Executive Officer of Alder New York
My name is Nina Zilka. I live in an old brownstone in Brooklyn, New York with my amazing partner Trevor. I went to school at Pratt Institute, for Fashion Design, which is where I met my best friend and business partner - Alder New York’s Chief Creative Officer- David.
My inspirations are always changing. I get really obsessed with something for about ten minutes, and then I’m on to the next thing. But I do always come back to 60’s and 70s prints, miniature anything, and good industrial design.
Alder New York is a genderless line of truly clean, vegan, affordable skincare and haircare that is as sleek and cool as it is effective. David and I couldn’t find anything that was quite what we were looking for; so many brands with good design are “clean-washed” and all the really clean brands we could find had terrible packaging. We were so tired and uninspired by hyper feminism or hyper masculine marketing- neither of us subscribe to that kind of gender specific marketing, especially when it comes to skincare or haircare which we think is genderless. So we created Alder New York.
We came up with the idea in 2015 and spent about a year perfecting the design and formulas. We launched at the end of 2016.
We hit these four points in skincare and haircare: We're vegan, genderless, truly clean, and affordable. Nothing we make is above $36 (for our full size Everyday Face Serum) because we believe clean skincare and great design should be accessible.
I am particularly partial to our Everyday Face Moisturizer. It's so lightweight but deeply hydrating thanks to hyaluronic acid and sunflower oil. It's the best moisturizer I have ever used hands down.
